Emblemes
Francis Quarles's Emblemes, an English devotional emblem book first issued in 1635 and reprinted in London in 1658 for John Williams and Francis Eglesfeild, with copperplates by William Marshall and William Simpson adapted from Continental Jesuit emblem series for Protestant lay readers. The small engravings pair a winged Cupid-like Divine Love with the child-soul Anima in open landscapes, using radiating haloes, hatched skies, hearts, arrows, orbs and the eye in a cloud; useful for compact allegorical vignettes, line-engraved sunbursts and figures set in bordered plates.
