Emblems, divine and moral, together with hieroglyphicks of the life of man
An eighteenth-century London reprint of Francis Quarles's emblem books, first issued in the 1630s, with verse meditations for Protestant devotional readers, published in 1736 by a consortium of trade booksellers. The small copperplate cuts pair a winged Divine Love, a child soul and Anima with globes, arrows, hearts and open landscapes, useful for allegorical figures, rayed haloes and hatched cloud-and-sky textures.
