Emblems
Francis Quarles's Emblems, a Protestant devotional emblem book of verse and engraved plates, reissued in London in 1696 for lay readers who read pictures alongside scripture and moral verse. The small copperplates, copied from Continental Jesuit emblem books, stage a winged Cupid-like divine love and a child soul in dense cross-hatched landscapes, with radiating haloes, hearts, clouds, and emblem frames usable as compact allegorical vignettes.
