Emblems, divine and moral
Francis Quarles's seventeenth-century emblem book, reissued in 1839 by London's Milton Press with commentary by Toplady, Ryland and Wilson for Protestant devotional readers. Eighty small copperplate scenes pair a winged child soul with a haloed Divine Love in landscapes of blasted trees, walled cities, armillary spheres and cloudbanks of cherub heads, supplying compact allegorical figures and ruled plate borders.
