Emblems, divine and moral : The school of the heart; and Hieroglyphics of the life of man
A Victorian reprint of Francis Quarles's seventeenth-century emblem books, with Christopher Harvey's School of the Heart, issued by William Tegg in London in 1866 for devotional and general readers. Small wood-engraved plates pair a winged Cupid-like soul with a female figure in landscapes ruled with dense horizontal line-shading, offering radiant sunburst haloes, hearts, serpents and clouds of angels as compact symbolic motifs.
