Emblems, divine and moral
Francis Quarles's seventeenth-century emblem verses, reissued in 1845 by Thomas Tegg of Cheapside in an edition edited by Samuel Weller Singer for Victorian devotional readers. The wood engravings set a winged, haloed Cupid-like figure and a robed human soul in bare landscapes, with ruled hatching for sky and cloud, offering ready-made allegorical figures, radiating suns, and emblem borders.
