Emblems divine and moral
Francis Quarles's seventeenth-century emblem verses reissued in 1851 as a cheap Halifax reprint by Milner & Sowerby, aimed at popular devotional readers. Numbered wood engravings, coarsely cut after the original copperplates, stage a winged child-angel and a robed soul among globes, sundials, chains, crosses and cloud-borne cherub choirs, with dense parallel-line skies and hatched foliage useful as emblem motifs, allegorical props and heavy-contrast vignette frames.
