Emblems, divine and moral
Francis Quarles's seventeenth-century English emblem book, reissued in 1812 by C. Whittingham at the Chiswick Press in London for readers of devotional verse and collectors of older poetry. The 78 woodcuts repeat two small figures — a haloed winged boy and a robed female soul — in bare landscapes with ruled, banded skies, joined by horned devils, towers, hearts and skeletons, giving designers compact allegorical scenes with strong flat hatching.
