Emblems divine and moral
Francis Quarles's Emblems Divine and Moral, first issued in 1635 and reprinted in London by J. Bennet in 1839 with notes by Toplady, Ryland and Wilson, for Protestant devotional readers. Each emblem is a small copperplate scene, framed by ruled borders and captioned Book and Emblem number, in which a winged Divine Love and a child soul act out moral lessons with globes, chains, torches, hearts and cages against open landscapes.
