Emblems, divine and moral. New ed., carefully rev. and corr., with recommendatory prefaces by Augustus Toplady, and John Ryland
Francis Quarles's emblem book of 1635, reissued in 1839 by J. Bennet of London with prefaces by the evangelical clergymen Augustus Toplady and John Ryland, for Protestant devotional readers. The copperplate emblems pair a haloed winged child with a demon and a crowned female soul against plain landscapes, giving designers ruled frames, numbered captions, globes, hourglasses, arrows and clouded skies.
