Quarles, Francis, 1592-1644, Quarles, Francis, 1592-1644. Hieroglyphics of the life of man, Trapp, H · 1777 · London : Printed and sold by H. Trapp ... · 78 pictures

A late reissue of Francis Quarles's 1630s English emblem books, printed by H. Trapp in London in 1777 for readers of devotional verse and moral meditation. The engraved plates set small figures in open landscapes inside rococo cartouche frames: a haloed Divine Love child, a winged soul, a horned devil with a basket, a radiant sun and an eye in the clouds, with dense ruled hatching designers can lift as borders, emblem vignettes, or symbols.
