Emblems divine and moral ; together with Hieroglyphics of the life of man
A late reprint of Francis Quarles's 1630s English emblem books, Emblems Divine and Moral and Hieroglyphics of the Life of Man, printed and sold by H. Trapp in London in 1777 for Protestant readers who paired verse meditations with pictures. The plates are small copperplate engravings built on one repeated motif — a burning candle in a two-handled urn candlestick set in an open landscape, ringed by a rococo scroll cartouche — varied with planetary and zodiac signs, bare and flowering trees, dogs, hares and clouded angels, giving designers a ready-made frame device and a set of stock emblem symbols.
