Emblems, divine and moral
A 19th-century London reprint (J. Robins, 1824) of Francis Quarles's 1635 emblem book, with Christopher Harvey's companion verses, issued for devotional readers as moralised picture-and-poem meditations. The copperplate emblems set a winged child-angel and a soul figure in landscapes with suns, stars, trees and storm clouds, each ruled in a double border with book and emblem numbers, offering designers small allegorical scenes, radiating light effects and dense cross-hatched skies.
