Emblems of love, in four languages : dedicated to the ladys
An emblem book by Philip Ayres, printed in London in 1683 with engravings by S. Nicholls, pairing love mottoes and verse in English, Latin, Italian and French for a gentlewoman readership. Each plate sets a winged Cupid in a sparse landscape with oak trees, distant domed towns and draped tents, acting out a single conceit with bow, torch or trophy pile of armour, usable as compact vignettes, spot figures and borders.
