Emblems of love in four languages : dedicated to the ladys
An emblem book by Philip Ayres, first issued in the 1680s and reprinted in London by J. Wren in 1747, pairing love mottoes and verses in English, Latin, Italian and French for a fashionable readership of women. The 48 copperplate scenes set winged cupids in open landscapes with a framing oak, distant villages, hills and birds, drawn in fine parallel-line engraving; useful for cutout figures, small emblem borders, and stock pastoral backgrounds.
