An attempt to discriminate the styles of architecture in England : from the Conquest to the Reformation : with a sketch of the Grecian and Roman orders
Thomas Rickman's classification of English medieval architecture, first issued in 1817 and here in the 1862 Oxford edition revised by John Henry Parker, made for antiquaries, architects and students learning to date buildings by their details. The 466 wood engravings isolate single features against blank grounds \u2014 traceried windows, clustered piers, foliate capitals, arcading and mouldings \u2014 drawn in fine line with light shading, giving designers clean, cut-out Gothic components at legible scale.
