Engraved gems; their history and place in art, in which is embodied the author's former treatise, with extensive revisions and additions; reminiscences of travels in the pursuit and acquisition of engraved gems ... to which is added a descriptive list of the author's cabinet of gems, forming a compend of Greek and Roman classics and antiquities ..
A collector's history and catalogue of engraved gems by Maxwell Sommerville, self-published in Philadelphia in 1889, combining a treatise on intaglios and cameos with travel reminiscences and a descriptive list of his own cabinet, addressed to antiquarians, classicists and gem buyers. Plates mix line engravings of oval gem scenes with halftone photographs of cameos and intaglios, giving classical figures in relief, framed cartouche shapes, and small isolated objects on plain pale grounds for cutting out.
