Julius Meier-Graefe's three-volume German history of modern art, issued in Munich by Piper in 1920 for educated readers and students following painting from the nineteenth century onward. The 206 plates are monochrome halftone reproductions of paintings and drawings — bathing and dressing nudes in curtained interiors, lamplit figures at mirrors, packed crowd scenes — with soft smudged tonal gradations and heavy dark grounds useful as grainy figure studies and atmospheric backgrounds.
