The epoch of the mammoth and the apparition of man upon the earth
A 19th-century archaeological treatise by James Cocke Southall, published in London by Trübner in 1878, arguing about the antiquity of man from Stone Age finds for scholarly and general readers of the day. The plates are line engravings of flint implements — hand axes, scrapers, blades and points — drawn in outline with dense cross-hatching that records each flake scar, usable as isolated silhouettes, texture studies, or a catalogue of irregular organic shapes.
