Essai sur le beau
A French philosophical treatise on beauty by the Jesuit mathematician Yves Marie André, edited by Jean Henri Samuel Formey and printed at Amsterdam by J. H. Schneider in 1759 for educated readers of aesthetics. The plates are printers' ornaments: foliate headpieces, a decorated initial J on hatched ground, trophies of mask and drum, and an urn-and-garland tailpiece, usable as small black-and-white page furniture.
