An essay on electricity : in which the theory and practice of that useful science, are illustrated by a variety of experiments, arranged in a methodical manner : to which is added, An essay on magnetism
George Adams, instrument maker to the king, printed and sold his essay on electricity and magnetism himself in London in 1784, for students and practitioners equipping themselves to repeat its experiments. The engraved plates lay out apparatus in numbered rows—friction generators, Leyden jars, insulating stands, balances, suspended pith balls—giving designers clean outline diagrams and figure-keyed grids of small mechanical objects.
