Examen fvcorvm psevdo-chymicorvm detectorvm et in gratiam veritatis amantium succincte refutatorum
A Latin tract of 1617 by the physician and alchemical writer Michael Maier, printed in Frankfurt by Nicolaus Hoffmann for the publisher Theodor de Bry, attacking fraudulent practitioners of chemistry for a learned readership. The illustrations are letterpress ornaments: horizontal woodcut headbands of dense acanthus scrollwork with grotesque masks and birds, and square initial letters set in white-line foliage, useful as rules, borders, drop caps and repeating strip patterns.
