Fashion's slaves

Flower, B. O. (Benjamin Orange), 1858-1918 · 1892 · Boston, Arena Pub. Co. · 33 pictures

A social-reform tract on dress by magazine editor Benjamin Orange Flower, published by the Arena Publishing Company in Boston in 1892 for an American reading public he hoped to turn against tight-lacing and elaborate costume. The wood-engraved figures show women in profile and from behind in bustled, trained, heavily flounced gowns, drawn in fine hatching against blank or lightly sketched backgrounds, often wrapping around blocks of text.
