The first man-carrying aeroplane capable of sustained free flight : Langley's success as a pioneer in aviation
A 1915 Smithsonian report by aeronautical engineer Albert Francis Zahm, printed by the Government Printing Office in Washington, arguing Langley's priority in powered flight by documenting the 1914 re-trials of his aerodrome at Hammondsport, New York, for scientists and aviation officials. The plates are halftone photographs of a tandem-wing biplane on floats, shown skimming and airborne over Keuka Lake with low hills behind, plus a hangar-side view with pilot and tractor screw \u2014 wide, pale, mostly empty frames with a small dark machine and long captions set along the edge.
