Five black arts
A popular survey of printing, pottery, gas-making, iron and glass manufacture, edited by William Turner Coggeshall and published at Columbus, Ohio, in 1861 for general American readers. The plates are numbered wood-engraved machine diagrams — sectional views with hatched masonry and timber, gearing, shafts, pulleys and furnace parts — useful as line-weight cutaway drawings, hatching textures and italic figure labels.
