Flandre
Max Rooses, keeper of the Plantin-Moretus Museum, wrote Flandre for Hachette's French art and travel series in 1913, surveying the towns, churches and painting of Flanders for general readers. Its 621 halftones reproduce Rubens, Van Dyck and early Flemish altarpieces alongside views of guild halls, belfries and street facades, giving designers dense crowd compositions, tonal grisaille masses and architectural silhouettes.
