The flora of the Assyrian monuments and its outcomes
Emanuel Bonavia's 1894 study, published in Westminster by A. Constable, traces plant forms carved on Assyrian reliefs and argues for their descent into later ornament, written for archaeologists, botanists and students of decorative history. The plates are outline line drawings of stylized palmettes, date-palm cones, rosettes and scrolled anthemia, copied flat from sculpture and reproducible as clean silhouettes, repeat motifs or border units.
