Franciscus Junius's Latin treatise on the painting of the ancients, printed by Johannes Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1637 for scholars and collectors of antiquity. The pictures shown are small square woodcut initials with figures set inside and around the letterform \u2014 haloed and crowned men, nude and draped bodies, faces in the corners \u2014 cut in dense parallel hatching, usable as decorative capitals, spot figures, or hatching texture.
