Francisci Sanctii Brocensis ..
An edition of Andrea Alciato's Latin emblem book with commentary by the Spanish humanist Francisco Sánchez de las Brozas, printed at Lyon by Guillaume Rouillé in 1573 for scholars and schoolmen reading emblems as moral puzzles. The 215 small square woodcuts set figures, animals, statues and buildings in open landscapes with cross-hatched clouds and rocky ground, giving designers a stock of compact pictorial mottoes: an elephant, a winged lion over a farmyard, a robed man on a pedestal, harvesters and diggers at work.
