Francis Quarles' Emblems and : Hieroglyphics of the life of man, modernized : in four books
An emblem book: Francis Quarles's 1635 verse emblems and Hieroglyphics of the Life of Man, reissued in a cheap modernized London edition by J. Cooke in 1773 for general devotional readers. Coarse woodcuts, recut from the earlier engravings, set winged Cupid-like figures, a globe, a skeleton and a hooded soul against radiating suns, hatched skies and framed landscapes — useful for dense line texture and allegorical shorthand.
