French painting in the sixteenth century
A survey of sixteenth-century French painting by art historian Louis Dimier, translated for an English readership and issued in London and New York in 1904 as part of a series of scholarly art handbooks. The plates are halftone reproductions of drawings, frescoes and panel paintings: chalk portrait heads, crowded battle and mythological compositions, ceiling schemes framed in strapwork cartouches, useful for Renaissance figure groups, ornamental borders and soft tonal drawing textures.
