The Salmagundi Club, being a history of its beginning as a sketch class, its public service as the Black and White Society, and its career as a club from 1871-1918, with illustrations [electronic resource]

Shelton, W. H. (William Henry), 1840-1932? · 1918 · Boston : Houghton Mifflin · 31 pictures

A member-written history of New York's Salmagundi Club, from its 1871 sketch-class origins through its Black and White Society exhibitions to 1918, published by Houghton Mifflin in Boston for artists and club subscribers. Halftone plates reproduce members' charcoal and wash drawings of clubroom interiors, dinner tables, staircases and studio corners, with figures dissolved into heavy grain and deep shadow useful for atmospheric, low-key texture.
