Gabrielis Rollenhagii Selectorum emblematum centuria secunda
A Latin emblem book, the second hundred of Gabriel Rollenhagen's selected emblems, engraved by Crispijn van de Passe and published at Utrecht in 1613 for educated readers who collected mottoes and devices. Each plate is a circular engraving with the motto lettered around the rim and a single device at the centre — a hand from clouds, serpents twined on a plant, a sword under a crown, a sunflower turned to the sun — set against a small landscape of farms, windmills, castles and travellers, giving designers ready-made roundels, banner lettering in a circle, and fine-line hatched skies.
