Inside Out Library

The galleries of Vienna; a selection of engravings after the most celebrated pictures in the Imperial gallery of the Belvedere, and from other renowned collections in Vienna. With descriptive text

GOERLING, ADOLPH, 1821-1877 · 1867 · New York : D. Appleton · 120 pictures

A picture-gallery album by Adolph Goerling, published in New York by D. Appleton in 1867, reproducing paintings from the Belvedere and other Vienna collections as steel engravings with descriptive text for American collectors and general readers. The plates are tonal reproductive engravings of genre and history subjects: crowded tavern and village scenes, kneeling and fainting figures, riverside gatherings under trees, with soft aerial skies and deep shadowed foregrounds useful for crowd groupings, period costume, and grey-scale texture.
