Gallorvm Insvbrvm antiqvae sedes
A Latin antiquarian study of the ancient settlements of the Insubrian Gauls, written by the Milanese cleric and scholar Bonaventura Castiglione and printed in Milan in 1541 for humanist readers of Roman inscriptions. The plates are woodcut initials in white vine and foliage against dense black grounds, a printer's device of a crowned lion holding a castle inside a strapwork cartouche framed by laurel and lettered VICIT LEO DE TRIBU IUDA, and an engraved coat of arms with lion and griffin supporters under a coronet; useful for drop caps, emblem frames and heraldic supporters.
