Falkener, Edward, 1814-1896 · 1892 · London, Longmans · 7 pictures

Edward Falkener's 1892 study of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Asian board games and magic squares, published by Longmans in London for antiquarians and game players. The plates shown are line diagrams of magic-square knight's-tour paths, drawn as heavy angular zigzags enclosed in ruled square borders, each one a symmetrical lattice of crossing strokes and star shapes that can be lifted directly as abstract ornament, tile motif or endpaper pattern.
