Gazette des beaux-arts
Gazette des beaux-arts, the French art review founded in Paris in 1859 for collectors, critics and connoisseurs, carried engraved and etched reproductions alongside its articles on painting, sculpture and the art market. The plates run to outline engravings of draped seated figures, lightly hatched etchings after old-master paintings and drawings, and traced copies of medieval manuscript figures with haloes and winged angels, giving designers clean contour line-work and reproducible tonal reportage of artworks.
