Gazette des beaux-arts
Gazette des beaux-arts, the Paris art review begun in 1859, printed engraved reproductions of paintings, sculpture and decorative objects alongside criticism for collectors, curators and connoisseurs. The plates mix medieval subjects — a stained-glass roundel of mourners inside a star-patterned border, a crowned effigy against a fleur-de-lis ground — with antique fragments, terracotta masks and draped statues, all in fine hatched line useful for borders, silhouetted figures and ornament fills.
