Gazette des beaux-arts
Gazette des beaux-arts was a French art review launched in Paris in 1859, written for collectors, connoisseurs and dealers and illustrated with engraved reproductions of objects passing through studios, museums and salerooms. The plates run from hatched line studies of broken antique marbles and putti carrying drapery to tinted architectural elevations and spindly medieval marginal drawings of soldiers, castles and animals, giving designers reproducible engraved textures, fragment silhouettes and small narrative vignettes.
