Gazette des beaux-arts

1859 · [Paris, s.n.] · 133 pictures

The Gazette des beaux-arts was a Paris art review begun in 1859 and read by collectors, critics and artists, mixing scholarly articles on old masters and antiquities with reports on current exhibitions and the sale rooms. Its wood engravings and etchings reproduce paintings, portrait medals, sculpture and enamelled metalwork in fine parallel-line shading, giving designers profile heads in roundels, heraldic and Limoges-style plaque ornament, and figure groups in dense crosshatched interiors.
