Gazette des beaux-arts
Gazette des beaux-arts was a French art periodical begun in Paris in 1859, carrying scholarly articles on painting, sculpture, printmaking and private collections for critics, curators and collectors. Its wood-engraved and etched plates reproduce Renaissance ornament — pilaster panels, carved cup stems, grotesque friezes and scrolling arabesques with figures — giving designers line-drawn ornament usable as borders, headpieces and decorative panels.
