Gazette des beaux-arts
Gazette des beaux-arts was a French art review founded in Paris in 1859, written by critics, archaeologists and curators for collectors, museum men and artists. Its plates are pen-and-ink and engraved records of carved stone and cast metal — Renaissance ornamental friezes with masks and fruit swags, Romanesque capitals of crouching lions and eagles, classical relief figures in drapery — drawn in open hatching that suits reuse as line art, borders and spot ornament.
