Gazette des beaux-arts

1859 · [Paris, s.n.] · 209 pictures

Gazette des beaux-arts was a French art periodical begun in Paris in 1859, written by critics and curators for collectors, dealers and students of art history. Its plates are line reproductions of older prints and drawings — Gothic historiated initials, early Italian engravings, German costume woodcuts, grotesque mask ornament — giving designers clean outline copies of Renaissance and medieval graphic sources suitable for borders, initials and figure motifs.
