Gazette des beaux-arts

1859 · [Paris, s.n.] · 249 pictures

Gazette des beaux-arts was a French fine-arts periodical begun in Paris in 1859 and written for collectors, critics and museum-minded readers, its volumes mixing scholarly articles with plates after works in private and public collections. The engravings and etchings run from Renaissance ornament panels and pilaster details to reproductions of paintings, tapestries and medieval enamels, all in fine outline and hatching that holds up as flat black-line stock for borders, frames and decorative fills.
