Gedanken über die Nachahmung der griechischen Werke in der Malerey und Bildhauerkunst
Johann Joachim Winckelmann's essay arguing for the imitation of Greek painting and sculpture, printed in 1756 at Dresden and Leipzig by the Walther bookshop with Breitkopf's types, addressed to artists, collectors and antiquarian readers. The plates are printer's woodcut ornament rather than illustration: wide headpiece bands of scrolling acanthus, putti astride volutes, urns and flower baskets, plus a decorated initial built from a helmet, altar and spear.
