A genealogical and heraldic history of the commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, enjoying territorial possessions or high official rank; but univested with heritable honours
John Burke's multi-volume reference on the landed gentry of Great Britain and Ireland, published in London by Henry Colburn from 1838 for genealogists, lawyers and armigerous families tracing pedigrees without titles. Each entry carries a small wood-engraved coat of arms with crest above: chevrons, bends, lions, griffin heads, wheatsheaves and mullets drawn in firm outline, usable as compact black-and-white emblems or spot devices.
