The gentle art of making enemies, as pleasingly exemplified in many instances, wherein the serious ones of this earth, carefully exasperated, have been prettily spurred on to unseemliness and indiscretion, while overcome by an undue sense of right

Whistler, James McNeill, 1834-1903 · 1909 · London, W. Heinemann · 9 pictures

James McNeill Whistler's collected letters, press quarrels, and trial testimony, issued by Heinemann in London in 1909 for an art-reading public already familiar with his public feuds. The illustrations are versions of his butterfly signature drawn in pen line, small insects with striped wings, curling antennae and a whipping stinger tail, useful as marginal marks, sign-offs, or a model for a monogram built from a single continuous stroke.
