Geroglifici morali
Vincenzo Ricci's Geroglifici morali, an Italian emblem book printed by Gio. Domenico Roncagliolo in Naples in 1626, sets out virtues and vices as allegorical figures for preachers and moralizing readers. Each woodcut places a standing or seated personification with her attribute — lamb, birds, banderole, winged headdress, rays — inside an architectural border of grotesque masks, scrollwork and putto heads, usable as figure stock, ornamental frames or spot devices.
