A 1903 Chiswick Press reprint, edited by Silvanus P. Thompson, of the chapter on electrics from William Gilbert's 1600 De magnete, issued in London for readers of the history of science. The plates are decorated woodcut initials in a sixteenth-century Italian manner: heavy black letterforms framed by winged putti, lions, dolphins, masks and scrolling foliage, usable as drop caps or as small square ornaments.
