Godey's lady's book

1840 · Philadelphia, Pa. : L.A. Godey · 43 pictures

Godey's Lady's Book was a monthly magazine for American women issued by Louis A. Godey in Philadelphia from 1830, mixing fiction and essays with dress patterns and fashion reporting. The plates here are small wood engravings of single garments — bodices, pagoda and bishop sleeves, basques, ruffled aprons — drawn without heads or hands and shaded in dense diagonal hatching, useful as cut-out silhouettes, texture studies, or period trim and braiding detail.
